Novel Films

Madeleine at Scribble And Edit wants to know about novels/comics/plays and their film/TV adaptations.

How many have you seen/read both?

I'm pretty sure I've missed a few in compiling my list, but whether that is merely because it feels like it should be a longer list I'm not sure. I've discounted novelisations of films/TV/etc and concentrated on novels that were subsequently filmed.

My list is below in alphabetical order of author's surname:

Planet Of The Apes by Pierre Bouille
The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne
When The Wind Blows by Raymond Briggs
Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
Charlie And The Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl (filmed as Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory)
Fantastic Mr. Fox by Roald Dahl
James And The Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman
Far From The Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Mr Benn, Gladiator by David McKee
The Colour Of Magic by Terry Pratchett
Hogfather by Terry Pratchett
Soul Music by Terry Pratchett
Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett
Harry Potter And The Chamber of Secrets by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter And The Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
The Lord Of The Rings by JRR Tolkien
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh

Hang on, they made movies of the books by Terry Pratchett? I didn't know that! I love his books. :)

Well...

Those four Discworld novels were adapted for TV. Two were animated, two were live action, as was Going Postal(but I haven't read that yet...)

Hi,

Hee hee, age before beauty here, I confess some of these are young for me but I'll forgive you with Dickens & Thomas Hardy. ;)

Neverwhere was made into a movie? I love that book. I'll have to look into that.

I'm not sure if I've watched any of those, though I've read most of the Harry Potters you listed, and the Lord of the Rings.

My list should be up this evening!

If you get a chance, check out a fellow writer's zombie story and help me make him wear an embarrassing shirt next year! It's the ultimate grudge match between social media and the zombies. Details are here:

Francine, I suppose it averages out in the end.

M Pax, Neverwhere was a six part BBC TV series and I suspect it was probably a novelisation. It's out on DVD and it's good.

Kelworth, I'll look out for your list.

I've seen a number of the movies you list, but the only book I read was Planet of the Apes and that was about 40 years ago and I don't really remember how it compared to the movie.

A few of these are not familiar to me. I saw Lord of the Rings and am tempted to read the trilogy.

Arlee, Pierre Bouille's novel is very different to both the original 1968 Planet Of The Apes film and all, but the last scene of Tim Burton 2001 're-imagining', but it looks as though the new Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes might cover similar territory as the book.

Artistry collective, I'd start with The Hobbit if I were you, The Lord Of The Rings is about 1200 pages long, which is quite an investment of time if you discover that you don't enjoy it.

Oh I'd love to have seen Neverwhere. My bro's seen it. I think it's due for a remake. I should add When The Wind Bloes to my list and Granpa and Father Christmas all Raymond Briggs. Great list and nice mix of genres. Thanks for taking part :O)

Madeleine, thank you for staging this...

Great list. Gives me a few new films to see. I've never read Fantastic Mr. Fox, but I thought the movie version was charming.

Your list has made me realise how many books I've read and not seen the film! There are some fabulous books there.

Lisa, if you like Dahl, I'd recommend reading Fantastic Mr Fox.

Ellie, if you've read the book you should always watch the film if only so you can smugly point out the differences or say that one is better than the other.

Great list! I'm a big fan of the Harry Potter books and movies, as well as Lord of the Rings.
